In that context, running your data warehouse exclusively in one cloud, with consumption-based billing, can pose significant challenges.
Some organizations, especially those in highly regulated industries, may prefer to use optimized hardware, on-premises, under their own physical management. Others may be all-in on the cloud, but need to avoid the cloud concentration risks that come with working with a single hyperscaler. For them, an architecture that decentralizes data warehousing may work best. Consumption-based pricing models may facilitate experimental work, but once customers learn their workloads’ steady state, they may prefer capacity-based pricing, instead.
