The promise and challenge of data management in modern healthcare

From ongoing government regulations to rapid technology advancements, healthcare is changing fast. From a health information point of view it is no longer enough to correctly report what happened. Success in healthcare today means demonstrating tangible improvements in outcomes, using data from different venues to impact care in the moment and for the future.

For example, one of the biggest challenges for hospitals is making an assessment on a patient’s health with all the information available. Very often clinicians are making decisions based on a limited set of data. If they could bring data together from primary care, hospital admissions, and follow-up support services, healthcare professionals say they would be better able to offer the right course of treatment for each patient.  Moreover, if they could look at that data across a certain geography for example, they would be able to analyze trends on the health of the population, the way in which it is growing and changing and plan ahead to provide the right services for the needs of that area.
