1. Executive Summary

This GigaOm Benchmark report was commissioned by Workato.

An integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) product is a cloud-based platform that enables organizations to quickly and easily integrate data across different systems or applications and automate corresponding business processes. They provide a centralized hub for managing data integration and allow organizations to streamline operations by eliminating the need for manual data entry and reducing errors. With iPaaS, businesses can also leverage pre-built connectors and APIs to seamlessly connect with various software applications, enhancing efficiency and enabling real-time data synchronization.

We evaluated two leading iPaaS tools—Workato and Boomi—specifically across the top tasks a business would perform with the tools for governance and data security. Both Workato and Boomi offer robust features in these areas. Workato provides a user-friendly interface that allows businesses to easily manage user permissions and access controls, ensuring that sensitive data is only accessible to authorized individuals. Additionally, Workato offers advanced security measures such as encryption and multi-factor authentication to protect data from unauthorized access. On the other hand, Boomi provides a comprehensive set of tools for data governance and compliance, allowing businesses to define and enforce data security policies across their organization.

Figure 1. Workato vs Boomi Field Test Results

For our ratings, we considered functionality, speed of execution, and the ease of use associated with these tools as well as the importance and likely frequency of each task in an actual enterprise. Our tests of the most frequently used iPaaS governance and data security functionality proved telling. Workato produced a 95.2% rating overall, significantly higher than Boomi rated at 46.9%. Furthermore, we found that Workato’s data security policies were more comprehensive and robust than Boomi’s, giving organizations using Workato a higher level of confidence in protecting sensitive information.

When it comes to governance, in our tests Workato (96.2%) finished ahead of Boomi (74.4%). Workato’s lead in our testing of data security elements proved significantly more pronounced, scoring 94.4% versus Boomi’s 23.1%.

Key findings:

  • Boomi does not encrypt customer data by default and the burden is on developers to add that ability. Workato provides end-to-end encryption for all the data by default.
  • Boomi does not provide granular role-based access control (RBAC) and everyone can read/access everything, while Workato provides granular RBAC across all its assets limiting view, edit, create, and delete across all assets.
  • Boomi’s scope of user management APIs is greater than Workato.
  • Boomi does not support enterprise security features like data masking, enterprise key management/BYOK, hourly key generation, and secrets manager, while Workato does.

The results translate directly to improved enterprise-grade security with Workato, which provides businesses with significant security and governance advantages over Boomi. In the Test Definitions section, we outline the specific criteria and parameters used to evaluate the data security and governance elements of both Boomi and Workato. Additionally, in the Field Test Results section, we provide a comprehensive analysis of how each tool performed in real-world scenarios, further highlighting the advantages of using Workato over Boomi from a security and governance point of view.
