1. Executive Summary

Artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) leverages AI and ML to improve the way IT environments are managed. For CTOs, understanding the strategic importance and operational benefits of AIOps is essential. It’s not only about automating tasks and responding to incidents–it’s about harnessing AI to predict lurking issues, optimize performance, and drive decision-making. AIOps platforms analyze the vast amounts of data generated by IT infrastructure, applications, and services in real time, identifying patterns, anomalies, and potential problems before they can impact business operations. Adding business data to IT data allows an AIOps solution to support all of the organization’s operations.

AIOps addresses the volume of noisy and often redundant alerts, events, and messages that can easily overwhelm IT operations staff, and it enables faster incident response. Using AI and ML to scan large volumes of data, AIOps solutions deduplicate data, correlate it, and find patterns far beyond the human capacity to do so. This in turn reduces the number of operational personnel needed to address incidents (or eliminates the need for additional headcount) and frees up operations teams to focus on higher-level tasks requiring judgment and creativity.

Moreover, the increasing integration of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) into AIOps solutions is likely to be a game-changer, offering organizations the tools to navigate the complexities of modern IT environments more effectively. Generative AI is a nascent capability within AIOps, but by leveraging these technologies, businesses can achieve greater operational agility, efficiency, and resilience, positioning themselves for success in an increasingly digital world.

Business Imperative
By combining IT operations data and business information, AIOps solutions give organizations the ability to gain a holistic view of their digital estate. With generative AI and LLMs, new questions and better answers can be obtained. Additionally, organizations can now investigate and understand in real time the factors that cause disruptions. These include security vulnerabilities, compliance issues, and unplanned change. In fact, changes, both planned and unplanned, generate the largest number of incidents across all enterprises of any size.

Sector Adoption Score
To help executives and decision-makers assess the potential impact and value of an AIOps solution deployment to the business, this GigaOm Key Criteria report provides a structured assessment of the AIOps sector across five factors: benefit, maturity, urgency, impact, and effort. By scoring each factor based on how strongly it compels or deters the adoption of AIOps, we provide an overall Sector Adoption Score (Figure 1) for AIOps of 3.8 out of 5, with 5 indicating the strongest possible recommendation to adopt. This indicates that AIOps is a credible candidate for deployment and worth thoughtful consideration.

The factors contributing to the Sector Adoption Score for AIOps are explained in more detail in the Sector Brief section that follows.

This is the fifth year that GigaOm has reported on the AIOps space in the context of our Key Criteria and Radar reports. This report builds on our previous analysis and considers how the market has evolved over the last year.

This GigaOm Key Criteria report highlights the capabilities (table stakes, key features, and emerging features) and non-functional requirements (business criteria) for selecting an effective AIOps solution. The companion GigaOm Radar report identifies vendors and products that match those decision criteria. Together, these reports provide an overview of the AIOps and its underlying technology, identify leading AIOps offerings, and help decision-makers evaluate these solutions to make a more informed investment decision.

GIGAOM KEY CRITERIA AND RADAR REPORTS

The GigaOm Key Criteria report provides a detailed decision framework for IT and executive leadership assessing enterprise technologies. Each report defines relevant functional and nonfunctional aspects of solutions in a sector. The Key Criteria report informs the GigaOm Radar report, which provides a forward-looking assessment of vendor solutions in the sector.
