1. Introduction and Insight
All is not what it seems in the world of cloud computing. We have become used to considering cloud provision in terms of the “big 3” hyperscalers — Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Platform, and Microsoft Azure. Indeed, these organizations do account for two-thirds of the cloud market according to revenues.
However, we could add the word “currently” to the above sentence. In the GigaOm Primary Cloud Provider survey, only 48% of respondents see one of the “big 3” as their primary cloud provider.
In addition, if we look at IT workloads, we can see that only a quarter of organizations have arrived at a single cloud or multi-cloud architecture – 37% are still largely on-premises, and a further 37% are working in a hybrid environment.
Organizations are nonetheless looking to move three-quarters of workloads to be cloud-based — this is an EU target, for example. Which begs the question — who will they look to for help?
