Who We Are

GigaOm is the leading research firm helping businesses make decisions guided by tactical, practical and technical research. At GigaOm, we are committed to the concept of technical wisdom, learned through hard-won experience. Technical wisdom is what enables strategic IT decision makers to explore, scope, and grasp the critical and complex technical challenges and decisions facing them every day.

Getting more research in the hands of a broader, more diverse audience, promotes and accelerates innovation. Let’s start moving.

About our Research Engineers…

Engineers at GigaOm come from multiple backgrounds – operations and development. Software development, infrastructure engineers, cloud engineers, and SRE, to name a few. Their responsibilities typically fall under what Google defines as SRE, which is an infrastructure/systems pro that thinks about systems and architecture through a software developer’s eyes.

Our engineers can act as both individual contributors and team players. Both are needed because on one side of the spectrum, you will be testing and performing R&D for various products by yourself. On the other side of the spectrum, you’ll team up with project managers, analysts, and writers for research purposes.

What You’ll Do

  • Meet with technology solution providers (vendors) to gather requirements about what they want to test and why.
  • Perform Benchmarks for vendors, which can be thought about as R&D from an engineering standpoint
  • Lead efforts in helping vendors develop test cases and scenarios that demonstrate a product’s capabilities in the context of a buyer’s selection criteria (previous experience developing architecture, application, and system plans is a huge plus)
  • Define and create the test environment, infrastructure and applications to support the test cases.
  • Create/modify applications, write code/scripts to support the behavior needed for the test cases, and lead the engineering efforts for the product/tool you’re benchmarking.
  • Identify data sets and sizes suitable for testing and demonstrating enterprise simulated environments
  • Meet with vendors weekly or bi-weekly to provide status updates and help the vendor understand where the current test cases are
  • Keep yourself up to date with the latest SRE, DevOps, and cloud trends to ensure how you’re testing and interacting with vendors is up to date
  • Write research notes and work with contributing analysts/writers to form a report

Qualities We Look For

  • Future-Focused. You have your eye on the horizon looking for early stage trends, break-through innovation and transformative technology.
  • Pragmatic. You want to solve the problems of today to make room for tomorrow’s challenges. You look for the practical application of technology to achieve business goals.
  • Data-Driven. You challenge the vendors you work with to provide real world data to back their product claims. You can roll up your sleeves to work with engineers and develop technical benchmarks or evaluate total cost of ownership for solutions.
  • A Clear Communicator. You know how to distill complex ideas into high level concepts to foster understanding across stakeholders from different parts of an organization. You understand that listening is often the most important part of a conversation.

Skills and Experience We’d Like to See

  • Experience in a DevOps, Platform, or developer role
  • Hands-on experience of programming in languages such as Python, Ruby, Go, Java, .Net, C++ or similar object-oriented language. (you don’t need all of them, just 1 or 2)
  • Experience with automating cloud native technologies, deploying applications, and provisioning systems (containers, orchestration, serverless) and infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code/Configuration Management like Terraform, CloudFormation, and Ansible (you don’t need all of them, just 1 or 2)
  • Experience developing cloud native CI/CD workflows and tools, such as Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity, Code Deploy (AWS) and/or GitLab.
  • Hands-on experience with distributed application architecture, such as containers, Kubernetes, and/or serverless technology.
  • Experience with the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and delivery

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and Configuration Management production environments.
  • Knowledge of networking (VPN, DNS, load balancers, firewalls, etc.)
  • Experience with systems monitoring, application monitoring, and application performance monitoring (APM)
  • Experience implementing, conducting labs, or researching cloud native security concepts, DevSecOps, or MLOps.
  • Strong presentation, verbal communication and written communications skills.
  • Ability to lead effectively across organizations and engagements, preferably from a professional services organization or similar.
