AI and money laundering, robot manners, how AI may help fight ALS, and nimble robots are making news in today’s AI Minute.
Transcript
- In an effort to outsmart the bad guys, HSBC banking group is using AI technology to combat money-laundering. Joining forces with Ayasdi Inc., the bank is now using AI to automate investigations traditionally conducted by thousands of humans. The new technology has reduced investigative volume by more than 20 percent, uncovered new risk segments, and is saving the bank tens of millions of dollars per year. Read more.
- Ensuring "smart" robots are safe to collaborate with human partners, researchers recently completed a project to teach robots some manners. Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the team developed a machine-learning algorithm able to "intuit" human-based behavior and respond appropriately in unfamiliar situations. Read more.
- A team of British scientists reports a new potential AI therapy for ALS. Proposed to the team by BenevolentAI, new compounds have been shown to prevent the death of movement-control neurons and delay the onset of the disease in animal models. The team plans to conduct further testing as they work toward finding a potential treatment for ALS. Read more.
- Science Daily reported that UC Berkeley roboticists have used deep learning and neural networks to develop “the most nimble-fingered robot ever built.” Possibly revolutionizing manufacturing and supply chains, DexNet 2.0 can “pick up and move unfamiliar, real-world objects with a 99 percent success rate.” Read more.
