AlphaGo, the state of Massachusetts, Apple’s iPhone, and Porsche are making news in today’s AI Minute.

  • It's official, AlphaGo is retiring from the game. As reported in Fortune, “the AI that has consistently defeated the world’s greatest human Go players over the last two years, the robo-grandmaster will go out on top, after defeating China’s Ke Jie, the world’s top-ranked player.” The team responsible for AlphaGo will now shift their focus towards using AI to solve problems in health, energy, and other fields.   • For 14 years in a row, Massachusetts ranks as the top robotics state in the country on the Milken Institute State Technology and Science Index. Home to several of the top university robotics programs in the U.S., Massachusetts boasts more than 150 robotics companies. Mark Smithers, co-founder of Boston Engineering, told RoboticsTrends.com, “There’s a richness of the [robotics] cluster activity ... If you live in Massachusetts, you have no reason to go anywhere else because you can do everything here.” Read more.
  • Your next iPhone may come with an AI chip. An anonymous Apple insider revealed that for smaller devices the "Apple Neural Engine" is designed to handle the high processing power demanded by AI and could take over some tasks currently done by humans while saving battery life. Read more.
  • With an eye on AI, Porsche recently announced it will open an "innovation office" in Israel and will also be investing $8 million in the Magma and Grove venture capital funds. Magma Venture Fund specializes in artificial intelligence and automotive, while Grove Ventures, specializes in early-stage investment in IoT, cloud technologies, and artificial intelligence.
