Can you crowdsource a better artificial intelligence? Almost certainly. I’ll mention two projects. One is over at Kaggle, which was recently purchased by Google. Kaggle is a place where contests are posted to make improvements in algorithms with cash prizes being paid. The TSA has one going to try to spot weapons in luggage, which is being offered a $1.5 million in total prizes. Another initiative is the General AI Challenge, which has a $5 million aggregate prize which is being opened up in tranches as we build our way towards having an artificial general intelligence.
Are these practicable? Almost certainly. Pedro Domingos, who wrote The Master Algorithm: How the Quest for the Ultimate Learning Machine Will Remake Our World, says that artificial intelligence is still a space where the talented at-home-in-the-garage practitioner can still make basic and large contributions to the advancement of the science.
