Gigaom AI Minute – July 8

The Human Brain Project, neurons, and IBM Watson are all topics on today's AI Minute.

Transcript

The Human Brain Project is a well-funded European initiative to try to build an artificial general intelligence by modeling the human brain. The hope, of course, is that we understand enough of how a neuron works and how you get emergent intelligence from a number of them, that we can make a decent effort at trying this approach. Some scientists believe, however, that an individual neuron--what is going on in it--is as complicated as a supercomputer. That each individual one of your 100 billion neurons is in fact as complicated as IBM Watson or any of the large systems we have. If this is the case, then, it's likely we'll have to get to intelligence by another route.
