The brain, the mind, and consciousness are all topics on today's AI Minute.

Transcript

Those who believe that we are on our path to building an artificial general intelligence generally hold three assumptions. One is that the brain is something that we'll understand better and we'll know how it creates intelligence, and we will either create intelligence the same way or by a different avenue.

The second relates to the mind. The mind is generally thought to be the attributes of the brain that do not seem to be derivable from neurons firing--things like creativity. So the second assumption is that the mind, which is also necessary for general intelligence, is something that we will understand and be able to build.

And finally there is consciousness. Consciousness is something that people believe is required for a truly intelligent system. We don't know how it is that humans are conscious, but those who believe we can build an artificial general intelligence generally don't think there's anything particularly special about consciousness and that it too will give up its secrets.
