It’s deja vu all over again. Microsoft is dropping support the Google Talk and Facebook chat integrations fom the Outlook.com email service in the near future. Reminds me of when they dropped support for Microsoft Live Messenger back in 2012, and just as then Microsoft is pointing Outlook users toward Skype.

This was announced by email:

Google is actually the prime agent behind the Google Talk issue, since Google has announced that Google Hangouts is replacing Google Talk. Note that Hangouts is not  based on the XMPP protocol for messaging, so Hangouts integration will not allow users to talk to people using XMPP/Jabber chat clients.

Facebook chat is being dropped for unknown reasons, but may be related to the upcoming Facebook @ Work solution which will be competitive with Yammer and other social collaboration tools from Microsoft.
