HTC explains why the Android 5.0 update is late to its phones

HTC isn’t making good on its promise to get the Lollipop update on all of its phones within 90 days of the software’s availability from Google and it wants customers to know why. In a statement on the company’s website, Mo Versi, HTC VP, product management, offered apologies and explained what the hold-ups are: Namely, some Google issues that may also have impacted the carrier certification process.

“We’ve been working hard in the labs with Google and our carrier partners ever since the code release and are making great progress so far, but if you’ve been following the progress of this rollout you will know that Google has had to address several issues with this release. We’ve been diligently working to fix some of them on our end and incorporating Google’s fixes as quickly as possible, but despite everyone’s best efforts some carrier versions of the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) will not meet our 90 day goal, which is February 1st.

Versi noted that the Google Play Edition, Unlocked and Developer Editions of the HTC One M8 do have Android 5.0 software, but that’s small consolation as most of HTC’s sales come from the carrier models. At this point, for example, you can’t even buy the Google Play Edition of the company’s phones because the Play Store no longer offers any Play Edition handsets.

Still, it’s good to see Versi step forward and explain the situation to customers. And in his defense, Android 5.0 arrived on the scene with more issues than even Google probably anticipated. That’s not HTC’s fault, but it puts added pressure on HTC and other Google Android partners to integrate their software with Google’s as quickly as possible.
