Sync addicts rejoice: Dropbox for Windows Phone arrives

Keeping track of popular mobile apps not available on Windows Phone? You’ll need to cross one off: Dropbox for Windows Phone is now available. The Dropbox team announced the news at a not so coincidental time: Right after Microsoft previewed Windows 10 for computers, tablets and phones.

The free app, found in the Microsoft Store for phones and computers, offers 2GB of Dropbox storage for new users and can automatically back up all of the photos on your device, just as it can for Apple iOS and Google Android. You can mark files or folders as favorites while offline and later view them when back online. And if you have Dropbox accounts for both personal and business use, you can manage them separately within the app.

After installing the app on a Lumia 830 and taking a quick look, it appears to me that all of the major functionality you’d expect is here. I can share files or folders with a link, backup photos automatically right after snapping them, and favorite files for offline access. This is still version 1.0.0.0 so there might be some missing functions yet, but overall, Windows Phone users will likely be happy to see Dropbox for their handset.

News of the app also follows another announcement: Dropbox bought CloudOn for an undisclosed amount this week. CloudOn provides online tools to create and edit documents on mobile devices. Dropbox currently has a partnership with Microsoft for its Office products; perhaps the CloudOn buy is in case that deal ever ends and Dropbox wants to offer its own document creation feature.
