Get ready: Samsung making speedy 4 GB memory modules for mobiles

samsung 8Gb memory

Now that the latest version of Android is 64-bit compatible, tablets and phones can push beyond four gigabytes of memory. Samsung is happy to start that process, announcing on Tuesday that it has begun mass production of a low-power, fast memory module: The “industry’s first 8 gigabit (Gb) low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile” memory chip.

The new chip is built on Samsung’s 20 nanometer process and uses 1.1 Volts, which is less power than the company’s 4 gigabit memory module. And it can move data quickly too, with speeds of 3,200 Mbps — twice as fast as Samsung’s current chips. Samsung says the speeds can easily handle the data stream when capturing or playing UHD video or using burst mode on a camera with a 20-megapixel sensor.

With this announcement coming just ahead of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a few device makers tout flagship mobile products with 4 GB of memory. Such devices probably won’t be readily available for a few months, though, as Samsung is just now starting chip production and says it will “rapidly increase the production volume.”
