Samsung will keep its current mobile division CEO in his role

Samsung is still looking for a way to turn around its ailing mobile division, but it looks like the company has decided against a wholesale leadership change. Although Samsung is moving certain executives around, the current mobile business head, J.K. Shin, will remain in his current position, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Samsung did make several changes in its mobile department as part of its annual shuffle: D.J. Lee, a fairly public face, is out as the head of sales and marketing for the mobile division. It also looks like the reorganization isn’t quite over, with more changes expected in the coming weeks.

But the changes are ultimately minor compared to the rumors flying last week, which had hinted that Shin, one of the three Samsung Electronics “co-CEOs,” was on his way out. Shin took over the mobile division in 2009, building it up into the global sales behemoth that it is today. But in the past year, profits from the mobile division have been plummeting and many observers think it’s time for a strategy shift.

Jay Lee, current [company]Samsung[/company] Electronics vice chairman and heir to ailing Samsung patriarch Kun-hee Lee, has been assuming a more public leadership role in recent months, meeting with [company]Facebook[company] CEO Mark Zuckerberg in Korea in October, for example.

There were changes made in other divisions besides mobile. Hong Won-pyo will take over Samsung’s global marketing office. Won-pyo was previously in charge of Samsung’s Media Solution Center, which spearheaded programs like Samsung Apps and the development of the Tizen operating system ecosystem. Won-pyo’s departure calls into question the future of Samsung’s software and services departments as they currently exist.

  1. On the software side , it should be about to be one the biggest moves they make for 2015.
    Thy are rumored to add themes and since many hate their UI, themes could be a big help. They might also launch the first Tizen phone next week and it remains to be seen how they try to make it a viable OS. They could price Tizen phones way lower to both compete and give the OS a real chance.
    So maybe Hong Won-pyo moving to marketing means they’ll push a lot harder not less.
