Reinventing personal media sharing isn’t easy: Salt Lake City, Utah-based Jux.com learned this lesson the hard way over the last few years, and announced Wednesday that it will shut down by the end of the month. Jux informed users about the shut down with an email that read in part:
Unfortunately, the costs to maintain the infrastructure have become overly burdensome for our generous supporters, so it is with great sadness that we announce the closure of the Jux services platform at the end of November.
Jux tried to find a niche somewhere between Instagram and Medium by allowing users to publish slideshows and other immersive media that mixed text with photos and videos. It was an interesting approach, but one that wasn’t easy to explain to users.
Jux came close to shutting down once before: In July of 2013, the company announced that it had to close down its service, but soon after, a new team took over and things seemed take a turn for the better. Jux’s new management even announced a number of new products earlier this year, including premium services and TV integration.
Now it looks as if someone else will have to pick up where Jux left off. Existing users are being told that they will have until the end of the month to download all their files.
