Airbnb’s competitor, vacation rental site HomeAway, has filed a lawsuit against San Francisco for its new short-term rentals law. The company claims the law unfairly benefits Airbnb while penalizing HomeAway. For example, it requires that people renting their homes for under thirty days be permanent residents of San Francisco. But HomeAway residents are frequently renting their second homes — vacation properties — so they don’t count as permanent residents. San Francisco’s Airbnb legalization could serve as an inspiration for other cities to follow, so HomeAway is attempting to halt the precedent in its tracks.
