Let’s face it: If you’re hiring for a primo public cloud position, Amazon is likely your first stop. And it looks like Microsoft knows it — having recently installed a former Amazon VP Suresh Kumar as corporate VP for cloud infrastructure and operations.
In that role, according to the blurb, Kumar is:
Responsible for designing, building and operating the infrastructure that power’s Microsoft’s cloud; the engineering systems required for automating and optimizing the processes associated with the planning and management of the cloud infrastructure.
The news was first spotted by Gigaom Analyst Dave Ohara who blogged about it here.
Per Kumar’s LinkedIn profile, he joined [company]Microsoft[/company] in May but was named to this new post in the last month. During his nine years at [company]Amazon[/company], Kumar served as software architect, director of software development and VP of retail systems.
The news surfaces just as Microsoft is set to kick off a cloud update session in San Francisco hosted by CEO Satya Nadella and EVP Scott Guthrie. Sources said Kumar will report to Guthrie and replaces Dayne Sampson, who is listed as corporate VP of Global Foundation Services on LinkedIn.
