DevOps is a discipline, process, and way of thinking rolled into one. While job responsibilities vary, here are three key learnings we have gained from listening to our 5,000+ customers:
- DevOps is critically important to the success of cloud-based businesses and customer experience
- Without automation and data, time is disproportionally spent on painful, tedious activities
- Time is universally the most critical (and valuable) DevOps resource
Loggly conducted a survey of 200+ DevOps professionals to see how much time they spend finding issues compared to fixing issues. The results were interesting: 64% of respondents spend at least 70% of their time finding issues over fixing them.
Really? Shouldn’t fixing be the hard part? Well, finding issues can be a real time sink. For example, when your application slows down, you may be endlessly asking:
- Which components are running slowly? Where?
- Are there issues with third-party services?
- Are there exceptions being logged?
This information can take a while to track down, assuming you even have access to it. The DevOps time survey also reveals a tremendous opportunity: Investing in cutting time from the process of finding issues generates the biggest ROI.
Think about it: 50% less time spent finding issues means 116% more time for the real work, shipping code. Furthermore, with engineering talent the scarcest resource in cloud-based companies, shouldn’t you (and your company) care more about the value of you?
