There’s a second-generation Moto G handset currently available, but it doesn’t have an LTE radio. This June, the prior year’s Moto G gained an LTE radio and it’s a solid handset for the $219.99 that Motorola charges. AT&T is making last year’s off-contract model even more attractive: Starting this week, AT&T will sell the first-generation Moto G with LTE for $179.99.
AT&T is sweetening the deal for those who switch from another carrier, adding a line or are getting their first phone: It will give a $100 billing credit for the Moto G with LTE if bought through the AT&T Next program. Those phone purchase options work out to $7.50 a month with Next 18 or $9.00 a month for Next 12. You can also buy the handset with a new one-year contract for $79.99.
When we reviewed the Moto G early this year, we called it one of the best budget phones you could buy, and that was without the LTE radio option. Many other low-cost handsets have come and gone since then but the Moto G is still a leader in the segment.
It has a 4.5-inch HD display with 329 pixels per inch, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip and 1 GB of memory. The 8 GB of internal storage is a bit skimpy but can be worked around with online cloud services. And the 5 megapixel camera is merely serviceable, not a top-tier shooter. On the plus side is a near-pure Google Android experience with Motorola‘s history of providing software updates nearly as soon as they’re available. And battery life for the handset is quite good as well; you should be able to get through most days without needing a charge.
AT&T says it will begin selling the Moto G with LTE on October 10, both online and in its retail stores.
