Here come the smartwatches with their own data connections. Samsung already announced its version, the Gear S. It appears that LG is following suit, based on FCC testing found by GforGames that shows an LG smartwatch with integrated 3G radio.
Given that LG is a primary Android Wear hardware partner, it’s a safe assumption that this watch will run on Google’s smartwatch software. LG debuted the first Android Wear device earlier this year, the LG G Watch. It has since shown off a circular model called the LG R Watch. Neither of these devices has its own mobile broadband connection, however; they rely on a Bluetooth connection paired to an Android phone. The tested device won’t be round if the FCC documentation is accurate:
Based on the limited FCC data, this third LG smartwatch variant can act as a standalone device as needed. It would surely still connect to an Android handset over Bluetooth, but the dedicated 3G connection could be used when the phone isn’t nearby. That could bring email, notifications and other information directly to the watch and also allow for hands-free voice calls from the wrist.
At least one mode of this LG device tested by the FCC has CDMA support, so it could be supported by Verizon, Sprint or both carriers in the U.S. It’s also highly likely that a GSM variant of the watch is in the works because it would be supported on a broader range of carriers around the world.
