Forget the $1 billion “unicorns” out there — the last year has been all about the rise of the $10 billion companies — both Dropbox and Chinese mobile hardware company Xiaomi both had rounds at $10 billion valuations, raising hundreds of millions of dollars. Airbnb may soon join that club: According to reports Thursday from the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, the apartment and room-renting service disrupting the hotel industry, is set to raise a massive round of funding at a $10 billion valuation.
Unidentified sources said that Private-equity firm TPG is likely to lead the round, which is reportedly between $400 and $500 million . The Reported $10 billion valuation is nearly five times higher the company’s estimated $2.5 billion valuation in 2012, when it raised $200 million.
