The impetus for creating a Cisco enterprise app store traces back to Dec. 2009, when the senior VP of global operations decided he needed to overcome frustrations with the sales workflow process. Cisco took advantage of the already popular bring-your-own-device policy (or BYOD) in the spring of 2010 and developed a mobile app to overcome the workflow problem. Other sales productivity apps soon followed, but the company lacked a secure way to distribute them and needed to find a solution quickly. With key factors such as time-to-market, security and adoption rates, Cisco conducted a search for a mobility vendor that focused primarily on the application life cycle.
Cisco selected Apperian and within three months, 1,700 iOS users were downloading apps from their custom branded app store, and by the end of that year Cisco announced support for Android devices. By the summer of 2012, the store boasted over 9,000 subscribers, at which point the mobility team worked closely with Apperian to roll out single sign-on (SSO) to create an even more secure and efficient user experience. Today over 12,500 subscribers use the Cisco app store.
The benefits of taking an app-centric approach included more than an 80 percent adoption of the company’s productivity apps, a reported 25 percent increase in productivity by the sales team and an increase in app quality through app beta testing and user feedback capabilities.
By taking an application life cycle approach and partnering with Apperian the sales team was able to “increase sales productivity and quality of life by enabling on-the-go access to critical sales processes via simple, intuitive mobile applications.”
