When it comes to data protection for today’s critical applications, many passionate discussions are happening in organizations. There is a constant butting of heads with the application and the infrastructure teams when it comes to virtualizing critical systems. Frequently as a result the most complicated applications are not virtualized due to these situations.
The reality is today that companies can truly have it all when it comes to backups for virtual machines. Platforms such as VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V provide an incredible framework for backup applications to work in. Veeam Backup and Replication, for example, addresses agentless backups by leveraging frameworks from the hypervisor in conjunction with application and operating system techniques with the actual virtual machines. These include Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) and more to properly prepare systems and applications for the backup. Advanced implementations include the ability to prune log files of critical applications such as SQL and Exchange to properly maintain the application in an ongoing basis.
While the backup engine is important, what is more important are the restore operations. For example, Veeam Explorer for Exchange (which is available in the Veeam’s free edition) allows an agentless backup of Exchange Server to do granular recovery and e-discovery tasks, but only if the system if virtual.
For companies today, all groups can meet their requirements with the right solution for their virtualized applications and systems. What’s holding back your virtualization initiatives?
