As promised, Amazon(s amzn) is now delivering its new high-IOPS instance types, first introduced at AWS Re:invent in November. Per the Amazon Web Services “What’s New” page, the new instances come “in 4 sizes ranging from 4 to 32 vCPUs (i2.xlarge, i2.2xlarge, i2.4xlarge, and i2.8xlarge) and SSD-based instance storage ranging from 800 GB to 6400 GB.”
These instances are recommended for use with high-performance NoSQL databases, where I/O can be a bottleneck. Amazon also announced price cuts on its first-generation H1 instances in some AWS regions.
