Bond, a mobile app launching Tuesday, wants to “blend technology and tradition” to make it easier for professionals to actually send those relationship-building gifts and messages. It offers users a catalog of interesting gifts, from $15 playing cards to $4,000 leather skateboards, and can send gifts even if users don’t know the recipient’s address.
For $5, the company will send a note handwritten (or at least robotically made to look handwritten) with a fountain pen on embossed stationary and sealed with wax. And, for an extra charge, the company said it can learn an executive’s handwriting and generate notes to match it.
There are already plenty of gifting apps from Wrapp to Sesame to Facebook Gifts. But while those tend to focus on birthdays and items in the sub-$50 range, Bond is going after enterprise customers willing to spend more on higher-end goods. The idea is to appeal to sales people, business development teams and other enterprise professionals who want to take corporate gifting to the next level.
Of course, part of the appeal of handwritten notes and carefully-selected gifts is that they imply that someone spent extra time on you. And knowing that someone used an app to make a nice gesture might take away some of the meaning.
But Caberwal said they’re not trying to replace the occasions when an authentically handwritten message or personally-selected gift is called for.
“There are so many times you want to send something but you don’t have the time,” he said. “We’re trying to move people from doing nothing to doing something.”
