The former President of design at Frog Design, Doreen Lorenzo, has left the firm to join invention startup Quirky, and will be heading up design, research and product development, according to a release from Quirky. The news comes at a time of transition for startup Quirky, which has raised more than $90 million from investors, and Lorenzo will help lead alongside CEO and founder Ben Kaufman.
The hire also shows how important design is becoming to the business logic of tech startups. Designers are becoming coveted tech hires, and designer founders are starting design-driven startups like Airbnb and Nest. We think it’s such a major trend that we’re spending two days talking about experience design at our annual RoadMap conference on November 5th and 6th in San Francisco. Speakers at RoadMap include Frog Creative Officer Mark Rolston, Airbnb’s Joe Gebbia, Nest’s CEO Tony Fadell and many others.
Quirky has built a community of designers and makers, and helps them turn ideas into actual products. Quirky says at least three new products per week are created from the community. Lorenzo will work on growing that community and product creation.
