YouTube (s GOOG) rolled out another site redesign Thursday afternoon, giving itself a lighter and cleaner look and introducing a persistent channel guide on many of its pages. Logged-in users will now see the channels they’ve subscribed to on any watch page, much like they’ve been available on the home page ever since YouTube underwent a big, channel-centric relaunch about a year ago.
Other changes include
- The design does away with the dark sidebar that was introduced last year and instead replaces it with a lighter-looking guide.
- Videos are now on top of every video watch page, with the subscribe button, channel logo and other elements being presented underneath.
- The large gray areas next to a video introduced with the previous relaunch have disappeared. Instead, users are presented with playlists and other videos from the producer in question – which looks a bit more cluttered, but could possibly also get people to keep watching longer.
I was told by a YouTube spokesperson that channel pages will stay unchanged for the time being, but that the persistent channel guide will find its way to those channels sooner or later as well.
The site also announced Thursday that it now has 800 million users per month, consuming more than 4 billion videos each and every month.
