Providing compute, network and storage capabilities on a “pay as you go” basis has made IT cloud services a viable business resource. Extending those capabilities to the Hadoop platform should not come as any surprise.
MapR has made great progress in this area by making its distribution of Hadoop available to the larger customer base through its partnership with key cloud service providers.
Firstly, teaming up with Amazon. Amazon’s Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) customers will now have an option to select MapR as the underlying Hadoop platform for their big data provisioning on AWS. Customers can now provision dynamically scalable MapR clusters while taking advantage of the flexibility, agility and massive scalability of Amazon Web Services (AWS). In addition, AWS has made its own Hadoop enhancements available to MapR customers. Advantages of using MapR distribution center around MapR’s enterprise ready features such as high availability, data protection and Inter cluster mirroring.
The second endeavor for MapR has been to team up with Google to provide its distribution of Hadoop on Google Compute Engine. The combination of the new Google service and the MapR distribution enables customers to quickly provision large MapR clusters on demand and to take advantage of the performance and scalability of Google’s cloud services.
