Pinterest drops invites and opens to all

Image sharing site Pinterest has been invitation-only since its launch in 2010, but now it is opening up to everyone.

The company announced Wednesday, “We’re really excited to have the capacity to offer Pinterest to more people and if you’re a Pinner with friends who’ve been waiting on the sidelines, we hope you’ll let them know.”

Japanese e-commerce site Rakuten led a $100 million funding round in Pinterest in May.

According to Comscore’s June “State of the Internet” report, Pinterest had about 19.5 million unique monthly visitors in March 2012, making it the fastest growing social media site of the year.
