Jury selection begins today in the patent trial of the century between Apple and Samsung. In a measure of how contentious the case has become, the two sides can’t even agree on where to sit in the courtroom. That’s because while Apple is suing Samsung, Samsung has also sued Apple, so each company will be acting as plaintiff and as defendant at different points in the proceedings. The party with perhaps the biggest stake in the trial, however, Google, will likely be sitting in the spectators section. Apple’s suit against Samsung, though nominally over the design of smartphones, is at least partly a strike by proxy against Google over Android. Google executives are not expected to testify at the trial, but its lawyers will certainly be watching the proceedings carefully.
