Apple today said it will spend $356 million to acquire AuthenTec, which makes fingerprint sensors and other products that help IT departments manage mobile devices. AuthenTec has gained some serious momentum in mobile security recently, including an important deal to provide its VPN (virtual private network) software to Samsung’s enterprise-focused smartphones and tablets. Apple is paying a hefty premium for AuthenTec, but as ZDNet notes here if Cupertino hadn’t picked up the company someone else likely would have. So in addition to bolstering its own mobile enterprise efforts, Apple has removed a weapon that might have been used against it by an Android backer.
