Original Productions, long established as one of the most prolific reality series production shops in the cable television business, has announced the formation of a digital production studio.
The company, founded by producer Thom Beers in 1999 and acquired by FremantleMedia in 2009, will now produce series specifically made for the Internet and mobile. It will also package bits and pieces from a library of about 1,400 hours worth of TV programming for those platforms.
“Recent technology advances have shown us that there are no boundaries, and the opportunities to create dynamic and innovative IP are limitless,” Beers said in a statement. “So, we’ll need the most extraordinary digital minds and innovators as we build our digital distribution portal.”
Philip D. Segal, president of Original Productions, will oversee the newly christened Original Productions Entertainment Networks. Gayle Gilman, who has co-executive produced the company’s popular History Channel show Ice Road Truckers, among other series, has been named as senior VP of the new division, reporting to Segal.
Original Productions has built its brand producing top-rated reality shows about rugged men in dangerous professions, filling the schedules of such channels as History, Discovery and A&E. Its roster also includes Deadliest Catch, Bering Sea Gold, Ax Men, Wild Justice, Storage Wars, Storage Wars:Texas and Black Gold.
