Last month, we hired another startup reporter in New York. Now, we’re adding one in San Francisco.
Eliza Kern did just about everything one can do journalistically at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated in May. For three years, she was senior editor and writer for the Daily Tar Heel, covering state politics and higher education. She won awards for an investigative piece about politics and abortion in North Carolina, and for a story about the problems with using search firms for administrative hiring at UNC.
In her last year, Eliza was picked to run the school’s new student-run digital newsroom. She devised the editorial strategy, hired the staff of paid student reporters, videographers, programmers and designers, and managed the newsroom. Eliza was also an active blogger in college: She launched a blog to cover the New Hampshire congressional primaries in 2010, and broke stories on the campaign trail that were picked up by bigger news outlets.
Eliza will be covering startups and innovation for GigaOM, and will be based in our San Francisco office. You can reach her at [email protected], and follow her on Twitter at @elizakern.
Eliza is part of a larger team at GigaOM that covers startups in number of different cities, from Boston and New York, to Austin and Chicago, to London and Berlin. And check out our recent series of stories on the startup scene in Latin America.
