The weekend review: sustainable cities, iPads and the cloud

Just in time for Earth Day, this week’s most popular content highlights our Green IT channel. Eric Woods’s “Key technologies for the future of the smart city” takes a close look at the concept of smart cities — those that integrate technology with sustainability, the well-being of its citizens and economic development. With a growing majority of the world’s population now living in cities, Woods provides current examples from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and North America, and he looks at the five major tech sectors that will drive future growth and innovation on a worldwide scale.

Next, in “How scribbling on an iPad makes your work life easier,” resident Apple expert Erica Ogg looks at how the iPad is helping us become more efficient, both in the workplace (through paper-reducing document-management and cloud apps) and in the creative space (through graphics, video and even music-editing programs). And last, in “A cloud-computing market forecast,” Rob Defrancesco examines the near-term future for the cloud market, detailing the SaaS, IaaS, and Paas sectors both domestically and internationally.
