BusinessWeek says Facebook has two dozen engineers under a former Googler working on search. But it also says their efforts are focused on searching Facebook content and things that have been Liked. And the ex-Google engineer is Lars Rasmussen, who worked on Maps and Google Wave, rather than core search products. Facebook’s current search is pretty ineffective, even though it is powered by Microsoft, which produces perfectly competent search technology in the real world. Microsoft has incorporated data from Facebook and Twitter into its Bing search engine, but hasn’t gained any market share versus Google. So this feels like an internal effort, possibly focused on helping Facebook raise the value of the advertising it sells on its own site. Don’t expect Facebook to be a player in web search any time soon.
