Walmart selling new iPad before Apple: Friday 12:01 a.m.

Updated. If you can’t wait until 8 a.m. to get your hands on the new iPad, Walmart(s WMT) has some good news for you: the retailer says that its stores will open at 12:01 a.m. local time to sell the new iPad on Friday morning, March 16.

Walmart is cautioning that “a limited supply” of Apple’s third-generation iPad will be for sale at each store. It looks like only the 16GB Wi-Fi model (in black or white) will be available, as well as the iPad 2. (Update: I asked Walmart to clarify which models they will be selling, and a Walmart spokesperson is now saying that “specific model availability varies by store.”)

Apple stores in nine countries will be selling the new iPad beginning at 8 a.m. local time Friday morning. In the U.S., AT&T(s T), Verizon(s VZW), Best Buy(s BBY), Sam’s Club and RadioShack(s RSH) will also be selling the new iPad.

Of course, if you’d rather not jostle with other iPad seekers standing in line, you can always order one online.
