O2 UK has become the latest carrier to draw unwanted headlines regarding consumer privacy when it was found to leak users’ phone numbers to every Web site they visited over a 3G connection. The operator quickly apologized for what it described as a technical error, but tried to minimize the situation by claiming numbers were shared only with “trusted partners.” But the snafu has already drawn the attention of the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s office, which will speak with O2 to find out exactly what went wrong. This is just the latest example of what should be a lesson to carriers: If you don’t keep your customers’ information private, regulators and policy makers will be more than happy to help — or require — you to do so.
