Public radio programming producer American Public Media is acquiring journalism crowdfunding site Spot.Us and integrating it into its Public Insight Network crowdsourcing platform.
In a post at PBS’s Idea Lab, Spot.us founder David Cohn writes that the acquisition makes sense because both PIN and Spot.us “create a media that is more responsive and responsible to the public’s needs according to their own volition.” For now, he says, Spot.us will stay the same. “There will be changes moving forward, but we will remain an open platform that will fund-raise for independent journalists and news organizations.”
Cohn founded Spot.us in 2008 with $340,000 in funding from the Knight Foundation’s Knight News Challenge.
