An unlikely but well-placed source has let spill that we’ll see new iPhones next month, appearing to confirm what rumors have already indicated. Former U.S. Vice President and Apple board member Al Gore told the attendees of the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit that new iPhone models would be arriving in October, according to one source who was present at the event.
Stuff Magazine’s South African editor Tony Shapshak took to Twitter to note that part of Gore’s address included him stating, “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug.” Gore has been on Apple’s board since 2003.
Still, Gore’s statement is really the closest anyone at or near Apple has come to making a firm statement about a new iPhone release date, with the possible exception of France Telecom CEO’s Stephane Richard, who said early this month that we could expect to see a launch Oct. 15. In both that case and this new one with Gore, it’s possible that the men were simply referring to the many rumors citing October for the iPhone 5 launch, including the latest report earlier today from AllThingsD.
Even though Gore did say “iPhones” and not just the singular “iPhone,” we shouldn’t read into the phrasing too much, despite rumors Apple will diversify its smartphone line. Gore may just have misspoke, or he could be referring to multiple storage capacities of a single model of iPhone 5.
