Yahoo fired CEO Carol Bartz who, after two years where she solidified internal operation, leaves Yahoo facing the same set of challenges it had when she started. Yahoo is an online media company – who ever really thought it was a technology business? – but its formerly successful portal business model of aggregating content, search and communications apps is broken. Yahoo has so far missed out on many recent digital growth opportunities (the big “socials” media, gaming, commerce) and hasn’t shown much energy in mobile. I recently wrote about a few things it could invest in to bolster its sluggish ad business: social targeting, syndication and video. Kara Swisher’s suggested CEO list doesn’t have a common theme. But Om’s not the only one that thinks acquiring Hulu and putting its smart, consumer product-oriented chief, Jason Kilar in charge of Yahoo would be a two-way win.
