Mobile application discovery and marketing is a difficult undertaking, with 450,000 iOS apps and over 200,000 Android apps. A new service from Mixed Media Labs called App.net wants to give application developers a much better landing page on the Web to promote their applications and let potential customers take advantage of Web search technology to find new apps.
Dalton Caldwell and Bryan Berg, the gentlemen behind Mixed Media Labs and formerly creators of the imeen music service, launched App.net Wednesday. Here’s how they described the service in a blog post: “The idea is to ‘close the loop’ when referring to their rate rather than just sending clicks into a black box and hoping app installs come out the other side,” meaning that App.net hopes to give app developers a way to link their Web presence to downloads, and see how promoting their application through channels like Facebook and Twitter can direct interested users to their Web pages, and then eventually result in downloads.
The service is free to try for developers with just one application, and costs $12 a month for 3 applications or $22 a month for 7 applications. It’s only available for iOS and Android developers at the moment.
