Sprint (NYSE: S) and Motorola (NYSE: MMI) told the mobile industry Thursday that they are close friends once again, sealing their “reinvigorated business relationship” with two new Android phones: a high-end model based on Nvidia’s Tegra chip and a more modest device aimed at Sprint’s prepaid Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) customers.
At an event in New York, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha unveiled the new phones, the Photon 4G and the Triumph. The Photon 4G is the first phone that Motorola has built for Sprint’s Wimax network, and it uses a dual-core Tegra processor running Google’s latest phone-oriented version of Android, Android 2.3. The Triumph is a little less accomplished in the speeds-and-feeds department, but will likely be a more affordable option for those customers who prefer month-to-month plans as opposed to two-year contracts.
So has Motorola, which reinvigorated its own business on the back of a strong relationship with Verizon, re-evaluated who it counts as its best friends in the mobile industry? A company representative didn’t immediately respond to a request for further details on Motorola’s thinking. But Motorola and Sprint said they plan to launch “more than 10 new Motorola wireless devices” on Sprint’s network this year; while that number includes some devices already announced, such as a version of the Xoom tablet for Sprint, it surely means that more advanced devices are in store for Sprint’s network come the all-important holiday shopping season.
The companies refused to provide any kind of color around when either device would become available or how much they would cost when they do arrive. The folks at This Is My Next said Sprint used the term “summer” during the presentation, which would technically give them until late September.
