As NetSuite becomes the latest SaaS provider to attack the large enterprise market, Fred Landis offers a timely reminder that the switch from selling on-premise software to supporting SaaS is not an easy one to make. Revenues may be huge (and growing), but people, processes and budgets all need to change before a SaaS play has any chance of success. Mis-steps by SAP and others offer lessons that are as valid today as they were at the time, and examples of a successful transition remain few and far between.
