Evidon (formerly known as “Better Advertising”), the behavioral ad regulation compliance startup co-founded by former About.com CEO Scott Meyer, has been looking to expand its own sales efforts over the past few months. As it has built up its salesforce with a number of notable hires lately, the company is announcing one of its biggest in the form of MediaMath’s Greg Smith, who has been named Evidon’s chief revenue officer.
Smith, a 13-year digital ad veteran, was most recently as SVP of sales at demand-side platform MediaMath. At Evidon, he will head a national sales team that has just brought on three new directors.
Among the new hires Evidon has added in the past few weeks are David Aron, formerly of MediaMind, who will now serve as Evidon’s Director, Agency Sales, West; Marc Nayor, from QuadrantONE located in NY and currently Evidon’s Senior Director, Agency Sales, East; and Tyler Sandler, another MediaMind alum who will handle East Coast sales as well.
Smith came to MediaMath, through his role as CEO of Adroit Interactive, which was acquired by MediaMath in April 2010. Before that, Smith was founder and CEO of EchoTarget, a behavioral targeting advertising network, which was acquired by Acxiom Corporation in 2007. Among his early moves, Smith helped launch DoubleClick’s Boomerang retargeting unit in 1999.
The continued controversy over behavioral ad targeting on Capitol Hill has likely been good for Evidon’s business. But with a crowd of compliance and auditing services also vying for the business of agencies and marketers, the company needs to have feet on the ground doing the outreach. Evidon raised $9.5 million last fall, and that will likely go to support more hiring as the battles over ad targeting show no signs of dissipating.
