Channel 4 is creating a new executive post to oversee the digital division of its movie production arm, Film4.
Film4, boosted by a 50% increase in funding to £15m a year, aims to use its digital arm to explore new ways of making and distributing films on the internet.
The new digital executive will report to the Film4 senior commissioning editor, Katherine Butler. “At Film4 we believe that the freedom to take risks is absolutely paramount,” Butler said.
“The digital and online space is a brilliant place to innovate and experiment, and we’ll be taking many different approaches in order to engage with audiences, always working hard to ensure we never lose sight of the films and film-makers at the heart of everything we do.”
Channel 4 confirmed in October that it would increase the Film4 budget to £15m a year, starting in 2011 and guaranteed for the next five years.
The movie production operation is best known for hits including Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting. Its recent productions include Joe Cornish comedy Attack the Block.
Tessa Ross, Channel 4’s controller of film and drama, added: “We’re delighted to announce this exciting new initiative. We know that we’ve got lots to learn and hope that this will prove a groundbreaking opportunity, both to push boundaries with talent and reach audiences in new ways.”
