Dave Zatz reports that DirecTV is surveying its customer base about a potential Netflix-like service, going so far as saying they are interested in offering a similar service themselves. The questions asked indicate that the company is thinking of offering the service for an additional flat-fee, which is a surprise to me since it seems DirecTV would use a service like this to maintain its customer base rather than try to garner additional revenues. In the end, I think that most consumers who subscribe to Netflix would probably not consider switching to a DirecTV version, given how late in the game the company is, unless they offered it free to existing subscribers. This is the approach Comcast is taking with its expanded VOD strategy, which is, in my mind, the right way for the “empire to strike back”.
