Not content with protesting outside Facebook’s offices, Greenpeace has launched a new scorecard on the whole industry entitled How Dirty is Your Data? Facebook has come in for sustained criticism over the use of coal to power its latest data center, but Apple ends up looking worse in this report so we can presumably expect more complaints to be directed toward Cupertino as Apple’s North Carolina behemoth comes online. Greenpeace estimate that data centers account for 1.5-2% of global power consumption, and that this figure is rising despite the innovative approaches to design and cooling that are beginning to emerge. We need data centers, and they need power, but that doesn’t mean the industry should be allowed to get away with anything less than trying its hardest to find efficient and sustainable ways forward.
