MarketWatch offers this thought-provoking piece that questions whether the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA is really the best way for AT&T to solve its spectrum needs. While it’s true that “putting the two networks together does not create spectrum,” as one onlooker opined, there’s little question that the takeover would be the fastest way for AT&T to enhance its coverage. But there’s no denying that every carrier is desperate for more spectrum as mobile data traffic continues to ramp up. As one former FCC CTO says in the story, “If the FCC changed the rules things would get better.”
